Dirt Work & Grading Terms, in Plain English

Dirt work has its own language. Here’s the decoder ring for your next pad, driveway, or drainage project.

Grade

The slope of the ground. “Bringing to grade” means shaping earth to the level and slope the job needs.

Crown

The slight hump in the middle of a lane or drive that sheds water to the sides. No crown, no driveway — just a future pothole farm.

Swale

A shallow, graded channel that steers runoff where you want it. The gentle cousin of the ditch.

Culvert

The pipe under a drive or lane that lets water cross without washing it out.

Cut and fill

Cutting soil from high spots to fill low ones — how a level pad gets made on sloped ground.

Compaction

Packing soil or gravel so it doesn’t settle later. Skip it and your pad sinks.

French drain

A gravel-and-pipe trench that collects and moves groundwater. We install these.

Frost line

How deep the ground freezes (roughly 32–36″ here). Footers and water lines must live below it.
